Post-Course Paralysis: 5 Steps to See Your First Myo Patient

March 02, 20263 min read

You just finished your introductory myofunctional therapy program, you’ve got the certification hanging on your wall, and your brain is buzzing with information about tongue posture and airway health. But then, Monday morning rolls around, and you realize you have no idea what to actually do next.

If you are feeling stuck in the "post-course paralysis," you aren’t alone. It is one thing to learn the science of orofacial myology, but it is a completely different ballgame to learn how to start a myofunctional therapy practice from scratch.

The good news is that you don’t need a fancy office or a 20-page business plan to get started. You just need these five simple steps to move from a "certified student" to a practicing therapist.

1. Get Your "Legal House" In Order

Before you print a single business card, you need to make sure your business is actually a business. This usually starts with choosing a legal structure, like an LLC, and grabbing your EIN from the IRS.

Even if you plan on seeing patients virtually at first, having professional liability insurance is an important first step. It protects your practice and gives you the peace of mind to focus on your clinical work without the "what-if" anxiety looming in the background.

2. Simplify Your Myofunctional Therapy Forms

Nothing kills your clinical confidence faster than a messy intake process. If you are still trying to DIY your handouts or you're using a generic health history form for a myo patient, it’s time for an upgrade.

To look professional from day one, you need a streamlined set of myofunctional therapy intake forms that cover sleep history, breathing patterns, and oral habits.

When your paperwork looks high-end, your patients are much more likely to trust your high-end expertise.

3. Choose Your Tech Stack (Keep it Lean!)

You don’t need ten different subscriptions to run a successful myo business. Start with a solid, HIPAA-compliant platform for your scheduling and documentation.

Many therapists love using Simple Practice or Jane because they handle the "heavy lifting" of forms automation, reminders and scheduling...meaning you don't have to manually chase down patients for their intake forms or appointments.

Pick one system, learn it well, and let it do the admin work for you.

4. Design A 'Mini' Marketing Plan

You don’t need to be a social media influencer to find patients. Instead, focus on building two or three key referral relationships.

Reach out to local dentists, orthodontists, or ENTs and let them know you’re specializing in myo.

A simple, professional "Lunch and Learn" or a well-designed trifold brochure can be the bridge that turns a local provider into a steady stream of referrals.

5. Trust The Process (And Your Training)

The final step is the hardest, actually seeing the patient. Remember that you were trained for this. You don’t need to be perfect on day one, you just need to be a helpful resource.

Start with what you know, focus on nasal breathing and tongue posture, and build your confidence one session at a time. The "perfect" time to start never actually arrives, so you might as well start now.
